UMPC's are full fledged computer platforms designed to fit in the smallest possible package, with proper control inputs like trackpads, keyboards and touch screens, and high resolution displays. Everything from web browsing to word processing can be performed on a UMPC without too much compromise. UMPC's are the fastest growing and most exciting segment of the PC industry. As technology continues to shrink high performance computer parts, UMPC's will become the computing platform of choice for people on the move or who desire the freedom of being connected where ever they go.
There are many makes and models of UMPC's on the market. Choosing between UMPC's is a tricky task, as each device has its own unique strengths and weaknesses. Some UMPC's aim to be as small as possible, whilst sacrificing screen and keyboard size. Other ultra portables favor high performance specs, built with Intel CPU's, plenty of RAM, and decent video capabilities. The important thing to remember, is to choose a UMPC that shares a balance of features that fit your needs the best. Affordability is also a prime factor for many prospective buyers. Cheap UMPC's are in abundance, but certainly lack the performance that higher priced units display.
HP started their UMPC efforts with the HP Mini, also known as the HP 2133 Mini-Note. This excellent model has a 1280 x 768 resolution screen that stretches 8.9-inches and allows for a keyboard that is 92% of standard size. In addition, the HP UMPC is able to configure with different speed CPU's and RAM up to 2GB. Furthermore, the HP Mini can take standard 2.5-inch hard disks, meaning you will never have to sacrifice on disk space or HDD speed.
Sony VAIO and UX line of computers practically invented the UMPC platform. Sony has proven that they can create amazing handheld devices in whatever niche market they are in. From their walkmans, discmans and minidisc players, to their PSP and now UX line of ultra portables, Sony continues to innovate cutting edge technologies for size conscious consumers.
Asus is one of the world's leading notebook manufacturers. When Asus released their Eee ultra portable, it quickly proved to be a smashing success. Asus's strength lies in delivering solid products and cheap prices. You won't find the glamour and race speed specs on their UMPC's as you would with a less price conscious manufacturer, but with an Asus you will get high functionality and the cheapest possible price. Look for the full range of Eee UMPC's, covering multiple screen sizes and performance specs.
With Dell's strong relationship with Intel, they are set to release the most powerful and power efficient UMPC's available to the industry. Trust in Dell's experience to build a reliable UMPC at a great price, and with enough customized components to satisfy even the most picky buyer. Look to Dell for the Intel Atom CPU and Menlow chipset platform.
Apple's first entrance into the UMPC world came before most people were aware that the platform even existed. But where Apple failed with the Newton, they came back twice as strong with the iPhone and Macbook Air. Many people expect Apple to try their hand at a real UMPC in the coming future. Right now however, the Macbook Air is doing just fine, enticing consumers with its super thin form factor, and full sized display and keyboard. Expect Apple's UMPC to be the iPod of the market when they finally ship.
